Description: 1857 Large Cent, large date, PCGS AU-53. Rich brown color and hard-to-find, light wear on this specimen of the final year of minting large cents of pure copper, before the mint switched to Flying Eagle small cents of copper-nickel later in the same year, changing U.S. minting in this way, forever. As expected for an AU53, this coin is remarkably free of problems, and understandably, was saved as soon as received in commerce as the changes in cents were implemented and the large cent was destined to disappear from use. They say that serious coin collecting started then, with this awareness. We are pleased to have secured this fine example, a clear and unmarred AU 53, for your acquisition.
