We have truck farmed for 30+ years and use these vegetable varieties our-self on our Southern Illinois farm, Black Diamond Watermelons will be available at our farm stand this season as quickly as they ripen in the field. This year we have decided to offer the same seed varieties we grow for sale in our Ebay store, our seeds are acquired fresh annually in bulk from Horticultural Products and Services of Wisconsin and broken down into smaller, manageable lots. Black Diamonds are an open pollinated type Watermelon, a very old variety which has been around longer than I can remember. , They reach maturity at around 90 days. Big fruits can weigh over 40 pounds. Plants do best in full sun, they need 1-2" of water a week and if you can manage it keep the ground moist but not wet. I like to direct sow watermelons but they can be started early under glass, the ground needs to be 70 degrees or warmer when they go into the ground but if you plant them on black synthetic mulch it will help warm up the ground and retain some heat at night.
